What is Rhizomatix.net?
My home page and space for putting personal projects online. What can you find here?
- This is a website I did for lothlorien therapeutic community - a place in the scottish borders where people with mental health problems can stay for a while in a supportive community.
- Charabanc is a javascript web app that I wrote for doing virtual guided tours of a place. It lets you look at panoramic photographs taken on the site, giving you the impression you are walking round.
- More to come if I get round to it...
Why Rhizomatix?
A Rhizome is a kind of branching root network found in certain plants (e.g. ginger). Unlike most plants, you can have more than one leafy upper stem from the same root. A mycorrhiza is a similar structure found in soil fungi which live symbiotically with the roots of their host plants.
The word has also come to take on a meaning in philosophy, following the work of two French philosophers, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, who used 'rhizome' as a more general metaphor describing networks of things which have no central point of organisation or control. The internet is one such network; neurons in the brain are another; you can also find rhizomic networks in the social world - e.g. friendship networks.
The 'ix' refers to Unix, the 'mother system' from which free software operating systems such as Linux and BSD are derived.
